Ministry Partner: Sugandh
Location: New Delhi, India
The Sugandh Child Development Center, located in a slum in South Delhi, India, has been transforming the lives of working children for 22 years. Before working as trash collectors in the marketplace, children ages 6–10 come to the center for two hours. Kids receive a meal and are taught reading, writing, mathematics, and about Jesus. Sugandh also operates a Bible and vocational skills school where young adults and teenagers learn sewing, painting, and card making.
Sugandh offers savings and loan cooperative groups to women in the slums who do not have the documentation needed for a bank account or whose monthly savings are exceeded by the cost of getting to a bank. Money from savings and low-interest loans from the cooperative groups enable women to buy small plots of land in their villages, cover medical expenses, and fund their children's education.
Sugandh operates outreach programs offering basic health care and awareness campaigns. These initiatives empower vulnerable communities, improving their quality of life through access to basic needs such as clean drinking water and electricity in homes.
